Something I’ve been wanting to ask for a while is, why do we persist with preferred lies? Is it because a lot of members expect this format?

Given the lack of rain over the past months, the only thing preferred lies does is damage the best parts of the fairways.

“Play it as it lies” would speed up the game and take out the decision of what part of the course is mown or not.
