Honouring a Legend: Lester Peterson
The Lester Peterson Cup is named in honour of one of Australia’s most accomplished senior amateur golfers, Lester Peterson — a true icon of the game whose career has spanned continents, decades, and championships.
Lester’s journey began at Bardwell Valley, where he won the Club Championship multiple times starting in 1976. His exceptional talent soon saw him rise through the ranks to represent NSW from 1984 to 1999, with a comeback appearance in 2005.
Internationally, Lester proudly represented Australia between 1986 and 1996, including three appearances at the prestigious Eisenhower Trophy in Stockholm, Christchurch, and Paris. He made one final national appearance in 2009 at the Four Nations Cup in Canada, stepping in for a sick player while serving as team manager.
Lester’s list of victories is vast and global:
New Zealand, Malaysian, Austrian, and Argentinian Amateur Champions
Runner-up twice in the Australian Amateur and once in the NZ Amateur
Winner of the NSW Amateur, Mid-Amateur, Senior Amateur, Par 3, and Foursomes Championships
Winner of the Riversdale Cup (twice), Lake Macquarie Amateur, South Australian Invitational, and Federal Amateur
Champion at numerous Vardon events, including Concord, Pymble, Pennant Hills, and St Michael’s Cups
He also:
Competed in five British Amateur Championships (qualifying for match play four times)
Played Open Championship qualifying at Turnberry in 1986, narrowly missing a start
Made match play at the 1994 US Amateur at TPC Sawgrass, after winning sectional qualifying in Rhode Island
Teed it up many times in the Australian Open, Australian Masters, NSW Open, Victoria Open, and SA Open
Lester Peterson’s career is a testament to excellence, consistency, and enduring passion for the game. And word is—when he retires and hits the senior circuit full-time, the competition better watch out!
