BVGC has sought the assistance of Martyn Black
BVGC has sought the assistance of Martyn Black, an agronomist and very respected former Superintendent at Pennant Hills GC and Castle Hill GC.
His expertise and knowledge of all aspects of Golf Course management and maintenance has been made possible through the Club Assistance Program organised by Golf NSW and organised by Ian Westley (Director).
Martyn visited BVGC early on Thursday 19 January to assess the conditions of the greens and associated conditions, eg bunkers, irrigation and invasion of grasses and tree roots.
Ian along with Dan Williams (President), Tony Crowe (Vice-President), Greg Hoare (General Manager), Sean Ford (Course Manager) and Bruce Alexander (Match & Greens) accompanied Martyn around the course to point out the problems and issues of concern.
Martyn offered advice as to actions required to solve problems as well as timings for work to be undertaken on greens etc. He will send a detailed report that will lead to improved conditions at our course and planning for work to be undertaken.
Some of the solutions to the problems can be confronted immediately. All greens and aprons will be aerated by fine 8mm tines on Monday 23 January by our volunteers and rolled and hand watered.
It is apparent that the coverage of our sprinkler system is not effective and often not done at the most appropriate time. Martyn recommended hand watering of the greens was essential to their rehabilitation.
Members who live close by are asked to participate in a program of hand watering of 3—4 greens each afternoon around 4pm or so. Hoses and training will be provided.
Dan Williams and Bruce Alexander will co-ordinate the roster.
Please contact either of them to assist the rehabilitation of your course.
